- "Poppleton was overlooked by a castle owned by the Earl of Paunchley."
- — Miranda Goshawk, Book of Spells[src]
This castle, located by the village of Poppleton, in England, was the 15th-century home of the Earl of Paunchley.[1]
History[]
In the 1480s, the Earl of Paunchley was a cruel tyrant who made the lives of the villagers miserable, meting out harsh punishments for minor misdeeds. It is known that young village women who did not curtsey low enough when he passed were forced into service at the castle.[1]
The grounds of this castle were expansive enough to hold a jousting tournament and had several apple trees (the fallen fruits from which village children were forbidden to eat — under penalty of a beating).[1]
