Baubles are coloured balls of glass used as Christmas decorations, usually by hanging them from Christmas trees.[1]
History[]
In December 1926, in Ginzberg Delaunay in New York, Queenie Goldstein accidentally kicked a Christmas bauble on the floor in the attic, which agitated the Occamy that was inhabiting there.[4]
In December 1993, baubles were used to decorate the Christmas tree in the Gryffindor common room.[1]
On Christmas Day 1994, Dobby the house-elf had a Christmas bauble tied to the loop on top of his tea cosy hat.[5]
In December 1995, before the last Dumbledore's Army meeting before the Christmas holidays, the Room of Requirement was decorated for Christmas. Harry Potter could tell that Dobby the house-elf had done it because nobody else would have strung a hundred golden baubles from the ceiling, each showing a picture of Harry's face and text reading "HAVE A VERY HARRY CHRISTMAS!" Harry Potter had a dream later that night that he returned to the D.A. room to put up some Christmas baubles shaped like Dobby's head.[2]
On Christmas Day 1995, the crystal orbs that illuminated St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries had been turned to red and gold so that they became gigantic, glowing Christmas baubles.[3]
In 1996, baubles was used as a festive password to bypass the Fat Lady portrait for entry into the Gryffindor Tower.[6] A few days after New Year, when Harry Potter, Ginny Weasley, and Ronald Weasley had returned to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from the holidays at The Burrow, Ron had confidently spoken baubles to the Fat Lady but the password had since changed.[7]
