Petunia Evans in her childhood

Lily Evans: "You didn't think it [Hogwarts] was such a freak's school when you wrote to the Headmaster and begged him to take you."
Petunia Evans: "Beg? I didn't beg!"
Lily Evans: "I saw his reply. It was very kind."
— Lily and Petunia Evans on Petunia's Letter to Albus Dumbledore.[src]

This letter was written sometime in the late 1960s or early 1970s. Harry Potter later heard Lily Evans mention this letter while witnessing Severus Snape's memories in the Pensieve in 1998.[1]

Contents[]

According to Lily Evans, the letter contained not only a request to be admitted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry but a beg to be a witch. However Petunia disagreed, stating that she did not beg, but could not deny that she did request a place. Dumbledore kindly wrote a reply letter to Petunia, rejecting the request. She also expressed disgust that she had apparently been snooping in her mail, but Lily indicated that Snape had seen the letter and could not believe that a Muggle could have contacted Hogwarts, leading him to decide that there must be wizards working in the postal service. This, however, only further enraged Petunia, who felt that "apparently wizards poke their noses in everywhere!".[1]
