"He hurried over to Ron, bent down, tapped Ron's leg with his wand and muttered Ferula. Bandages spun up Ron's leg, strapping it tightly to a splint."
— Lupin conjuring bandages[src]

The Bandaging Charm[3] (Ferula),[1] was a healing charm which conjured bandages and wrapped them around a wound, splinting any broken bones.[2] The bandaging also appeared to ease pain.[1]

History

In the 1987–1988 school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Jacob's sibling asked Madam Poppy Pomfrey to teach them this spell, and succeeded in learning.[3]

It was used by Remus Lupin in the spring of 1994 on Ron Weasley to support Ron's broken leg.[1]

Etymology

  • Ferula is Latin for "rod" and refers to a genus of plants belonging to the carrot family. The Romans called the hollow light rod made from this plant the same name, which were used for walking sticks, splints, and corporal punishment.
    • Silphium was a plant used in classical antiquity as both seasoning and medicine. Although its exact identity is unclear, it is believed to have been a now-extinct plant of the genus Ferula. The plant was ascribed with several medicinal properties including the treatment of coughs, sore throats, fevers, indigestion, and more.
    • Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant in the carrot family that used to have the name ferula before it was given to a genus of related plants.
      • As finule (in Old English), fennel is one of the nine plants invoked in the pagan Anglo-Saxon Nine Herbs Charm, a charm intended for the treatment of poisoning and infection.
      • Florence fennel is one of the three main herbs used in the preparation of absinthe, an alcoholic mixture which originated as a medicinal elixir in Switzerland and became, by the late 19th century, a popular alcoholic drink in France and other countries.
