The Fat Lady is a portrait who guards the entrance to Gryffindor tower at Hogwarts Castle. She asks for passwords before she lets anyone in, then swings her picture fowards so that students can enter through a portrait hole.

She is a very fat woman in a pink silk dress. Her portrait is located on the 7th floor of Hogwarts Castle, guarding the entrance to Gryffindor Tower. In 1993 The Fat Lady's portrait was ruined by Sirius Black (according to Peeves), and pulled off the wall. Argus Filch, the caretaker, restored her, but Security Trolls were placed in the hallway to prevent further vandalism. She has been known to move about occasionally and has a friend that visits her called Violet. The two drink frequently, including drinking several vats of wine that were in a picture of drunk monks

[edit] Behind the scenes

  • In the first movie, the Fat Lady (played by Elizabeth Spriggs) is shown with black hair and a pink silk dress and she doesn't seem to have much personality. Her portrait is also located in a different part of the castle.
  • But in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, she is played by Dawn French, who gives the character a funny side by giving her a bad singing voice.
