A Fanged Gerbil is, presumably, one of the denominations of wizarding currency. According to the books, a Fanged Gerbil is equal to 14 Galleons, 238 Sickles or 1032 Knuts. Fanged Gerbills are made out of an alloy of platinum, antimony, silver and uranium-235, although the precise proportions of each of these metals is kept most secret by those at the Magical Mint. It is also mentioned, that a Fanged Gerbil has the face of the current Minister for Magic on one side and, that when the holder of this position changes, all Fanged Gerbils must be washed with Polyjuice Potion in order to keep them up to date with current affairs since, unlike the newer, more cheaply manurfactured denominations, Fanged Gerbils are highly valuable and cannot be easily re-minted. One of these found was put into Augusta Longbottom's handbag as a joke by her husband in 1947, after which time she kept a mousetrap in the bag at all times since she confused this oddly named denomination of currency for a sinister-sounding rodent.
