An executioner was charged with the execution of magical creatures deemed to be a threat to others by the Ministry of Magic's Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures.
Executioners could also serve in executing human criminals who had been condemned by the law of committing capital crimes. The death penalty was a known punishment in the American wizarding community.
History[]
On 31 October, 1492, an unidentified executioner had the task of carrying out Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington's (aka Nearly Headless Nick) death sentence.[1]
In the 1920s, Bernadette worked as an executioner for the Magical Congress of the United States of America.[2]
Walden Macnair worked as an executioner for the Ministry of Magic, after having been acquitted for his activities as a Death Eater during the First Wizarding War. In 1993, he accompanied Fudge to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to carry out the disposal of Buckbeak, the Hippogriff who had been sentenced to death for its attack on Draco Malfoy.[3]
In 1996, Macnair was caught red-handed in renewed Death Eater activities, and was arrested, removed from his position as a Ministry-employed executioner, and imprisoned in Azkaban for his crimes.[4]
Since the end of the Second Wizarding War, it is unknown who was employed with fulfilling the role as executioner.
