Everte Statum is the incantation of a duelling spell. It causes a short burst of intense pain, which can make the victim stumble, but does not cause any lasting damage. Draco Malfoy used this spell against Harry Potter during the Duelling Club in 1992, despite being instructed to only use the Disarming Charm.
Etymology
- The use of the Latin word 'Everte' backs this up as it basically means 'to throw out' and “statua”, meaning “image”.
- The spell can also be "Averte Statim' as in Latin 'Averte' means 'Turn Away!' and 'Statim' 'Immediately'.
- There have been some arguments about the true incantation.
Behind the scenes
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, this spell has a much more powerful effect, causing Harry to fly back through the air and flip over. Its incantation, not listed in the book, is also given.
