"Is this all real? Or has this been happening inside my head?"
The topic of this article is of a real-life subject that has been mentioned "in-universe" in a canon source. The Harry Potter Wiki is written from the perspective that all information presented in canon is true (e.g., Hogwarts really existed), and, as such, details contained in this article may differ from real world facts. |
The euro (€) is a currency of Muggle money used in the European Union.[1] In Ireland in 1996, an issue of the Muggle newspaper The Guardian cost €1.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
- The euro is a real-world currency used in the European Union since 1999.[3]
- A Guardian newspaper costing 1 euro seen in 1996 could be explained away by merely stating that the euro was introduced earlier than 1999 in-universe. However the real, out-of-universe reason for this discrepancy is that the Harry Potter films were set in the 2000s, and the date on the aforementioned Guardian paper was 5 July 2007, as seen in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which breaks canon, since the book was set from 1996-1997, meaning that the Guardian paper was canonically from 1996.
- In the real world, the euro is the official currency of Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain, as well as most parts of Cyprus, France, and Netherlands.[3]
