The Engorgement Charm (Engorgio) causes the target to swell in size. It was first mentioned by Hermione Granger in 1992, where she suspected Rubeus Hagrid's pumpkins had been under magical "influence." The counter charm is Reducio.
Known uses
- Silvanus Kettleburn used an engorging charm on an Ashwinder which caused it to explode later, causing a large amount of flame. Professor Kettleburn received probation for this.
- Fred and George Weasley used this spell on their Ton-Tongue Toffees. In the summer of 1994, they "accidentally" dropped some in front of Harry's cousin Dudley, in order to test their new product. Dudley's tongue swelled to an incredible size.
- Kevin, the little boy from the World Cup campground used an engorgement charm on a slug with his father's wand.
- In 1992, Hermione suspected that Rubeus Hagrid had used an Engorgement Charm on his pumpkins.
- The Fake Moody used Engorgement charms on the three spiders he used in class to demonstrate the three Unforgivable Curses, so that the spiders would easily be seen by the class.
- Harry once used the Engorgement Charm on a spider while he, Ron, and Hermione were camping in the Forest of Dean in search for Horcruxes in 1997. Since he had not won the Blackthorn wand's allegiance, the spell was not powerful enough, and it took two tries for the spider to swell up moderately.
Etymology
The word engorge means "to fill to excess".
Behind the scenes
- In the summer of 1993, when Harry Potter was infuriated by his Aunt Marge, he unintentionally inflated her with underage magic. This may have been a wandless and nonverbal version of the Engorgement Charm.
- Ron stated that until discovering Hagrid was a Half-Giant, he assumed he had gotten in the way of an engorgement charm when he was a child.
- In the book version of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Mad Eye enlarged a spider only to demonstrate the Cruciatus Curse, while in the film version, it was to demonstrate all three of the Unforgivable Curses.
- In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Harry Potter casts Engorgio on the Bluebell Flames to check his blackthorn wand given to him by Ron Weasley.
- A variation of this spell may be Engorgio Skullus, which makes the head of a person bigger.
