Eduardus Limette Black[1] was a pure-blood wizard. He was an early member of the House of Black, being older than Cygnus Black I and Arcturus Black I, but it is unknown precisely how he was related to other known members of the Black family. He was disowned and burned off the Black family tapestry for an unknown reason.[2]

Behind the scenes

  • This character appears only on the version of the Black family tree shown in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. He was not included on the version of the tree which J. K. Rowling gave to a charity auction in 2006.[3] However, according to director David Yates, Rowling provided the filmmakers with a copy of the Black family tree going back eight generations.[4] The filmmakers presumably received a more complete version of the tree than the one auctioned off, which only goes back six generations.
  • This is the earliest known Black to have been disowned.
  • It's possible that Alexia Walkin Black, Phoebe and one more Black were Eduardus' siblings.
  • He may have been a member of Slytherin house. However, he attended Hogwarts in the 1880s, when Horace Slughorn wasn't Potions teacher.

Etymology

  • Possible etymology is that name Eduardus is derived from the name Edward, meaning "rich, blessed guard". Limette sounds like a French name, and maybe the Black family has roots in France, since their family moto is written in French, not the usual Latin.

Notes and references

  1. On the Black family tapestry in the Order of the Phoenix film, only Blacks by birth have portraits, and only their given names are listed on the scrolls beneath these portraits. This indicates that this character was a Black and that Eduardus Limette was his given name.
