Earwigs are an order of insects that infest dark, damp places.^[1] When Harry Potter was recovering in the hospital wing from his dementor-induced fall from his broomstick in 1993, Rubeus Hagrid sent him a bunch of yellow flowers that were infested with earwigs.^[2] The password during the 1995–1996 school year for a shortcut between the fifth-floor and Herbology Corridors guarded by a portrait of Timothy the Timid was "Flaming earwigs". ^[3]
