Ears to kumquats is an Transforming spell that transfigures the victim's ears into kumquats. The 1 September, 1995 edition of The Quibbler claimed that turning certain published runes upside-down would reveal this spell. It is in this rather unnerving context that Harry Potter and Ron Weasley first encounter Luna Lovegood.^[1]
