Rubeus Hagrid using dragon meat after getting injured by Grawp

Ron Weasley: "You’re not going to eat that, are you, Hagrid? It looks poisonous."
Rubeus Hagrid: "It’s s’posed ter look like that, it’s dragon meat. An’ I didn’ get it ter eat. Tha’s better. It helps with the stingin’, yeh know."
Ron Weasley and Hagrid discussing dragon meat[src]

Dragon meat was a piece of a dragon's flesh, which was bloody and green-tinged in appearance.[1]

Usage[]

It was placed on cuts and bruises for easing the pain of the injuries.[1] Though it was unknown if raw dragon meat was safe for consumption, it could be used to prepare dragon tartare, which gave the consumer bad breath.[2] It tasted comparable to pheasant, according to Neville Longbottom.[3]

History[]

In early 1996, when Rubeus Hagrid returned from his mission to the Giant colony with many injuries (actually acquired from his half-brother Grawp) and the trio came to visit him in his hut, he put a bloody, green-tinged, dragon meat steak slightly larger than an average car tire on his face as it helped ease the stinging. When the steak fell onto the floor and Fang drooled all over it, Hagrid picked it up and placed it back onto his face, ignoring Hermione Granger's protest of how unhygienic it was. After Dolores Umbridge's visit and departure, Hagrid fed the meat to Fang.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

  • In the books, dragon meat is large and green, while in the films, it resembles a regular steak. The steak seen in the film is also significantly smaller than the "slightly larger than an average car tire" steak described in the book.
  • The price of dragon meat is unknown, but given the comparative rarity of dragons, it would be considered rather expensive. In spite of this, Hagrid was able to buy a piece the size of a car tire and was willing to feed it to Fang.
  • In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Hagrid willingly gave the meat to Fang, though in the original novel, he had to pull it away from him in order to use it for his facial injuries.
