Dogwood (genus Cornus) is a type of wood of genus Cornus, a group of about 30-60 species of woody plants in the family Cornaceae. Most dogwoods are deciduous trees or shrubs, but a few species are nearly herbaceous perennial subshrubs, and a few of the woody species are evergreen.[1]

The various species of dogwood are native throughout much of temperate and boreal Eurasia and North America, with China and Japan and the southeastern United States particularly rich in native species.[1]

Wandlore

Dogwood wands are quirky and mischievous; they have playful natures and insist upon partners who can provide them with scope for excitement and fun.[2]

It would be quite wrong, however, to deduce from this that dogwood wands are not capable of serious magic when called upon to do so; they have been known to perform outstanding spells under difficult conditions, and when paired with a suitably clever and ingenious witch or wizard, can produce dazzling enchantments. An interesting foible of many dogwood wands is that they refuse to perform non-verbal spells and they are often rather noisy.[2]

Behind the scenes

  • Dogwood is one of Garrick Ollivander's personal favourites, as he always found that matching a dogwood wand with its ideal owner was always entertaining (due to the wood's playful nature).
