- — Harry Potter trying to evade the rogue Bludger[src]
The rogue Bludger was one of the two Bludgers used during the Gryffindor versus Slytherin Quidditch match in the 1992–1993 school year.[1]
History
- Dobby: "Harry Potter must go home! Dobby thought his Bludger would be enough to make —"
- Harry Potter: "Your Bludger? What d'you mean, your Bludger? You made that Bludger try and kill me?"
- Dobby: "Not kill you, sir, never kill you! Dobby wants to save Harry Potter's life! Better sent home, grievously injured, than remain here, sir! Dobby only wanted Harry Potter hurt enough to be sent home!"
- Harry Potter: "Oh, is that all? I don't suppose you're going to tell me why you wanted me sent home in pieces?"
- — Dobby revealing that he tampered with the Bludger to Harry Potter[src]
During the Gryffindor versus Slytherin Quidditch match in early November 1992, the Bludger was magically tampered with by Dobby to chase only Harry Potter. Dobby had hoped that Harry Potter would be injured and sent home from Hogwarts, protecting Harry from the opening of the Chamber of Secrets and the unleashing of the Serpent of Slytherin.
The Bludger nearly made Gryffindor lose the game when the Beaters, Fred and George Weasley, had to protect Harry instead of watching out for the rest of the team. Harry then demanded that they leave him alone to deal with the Bludger himself. The Bludger eventually succeeded in breaking Harry's arm, but Harry still succeeded in catching the Golden Snitch, thus winning the match, but resulting in him letting go of his Nimbus 2000 and falling on the sandy ground in the middle area due to his broken arm.[1]
After the game was over, Fred and George struggled to stuff the Bludger back into its crate, as it was still putting up a 'terrific fight'. Gilderoy Lockhart attempted to fix Harry's broken arm but instead made his bones disappear. This sent Harry to the Hospital Wing so that Madam Pomfrey could treat the vanishing with Skele-Gro.
Dobby later visit Harry in the Hospital Wing and revealed that he was the one who tampered with the Bludger, which contradicted Harry's earlier theory of Draco Malfoy being the culprit. The elf apologised for setting it on Harry, and hinted at the reasons, which he couldn't directly reveal due to the Malfoy family's involvement in the plan to open the Chamber.[1]
Behind the scenes
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the Gryffindor Keeper Oliver Wood's broomstick is broken off on the shaft by the rogue Bludger as he and Harry informed each other of the warning signs of the Bludger. Also, when Colin Creevey takes a photo of Harry and Draco Malfoy chasing the Golden Snitch, he has to duck quickly to avoid getting hit by the Bludger. Shocked and concerned about the Bludger's behaviour, Hermione Granger gets Ron Weasley, Rubeus Hagrid, and the rest of the crowd to leave their seats, runs to the middle of the stadium where Harry has fallen with Ron and Hagrid, and destroys the Bludger by using the General Counter-Spell right after the game, when the Bludger continues its assault on him on the ground.[2]
