Devil

An artistic depiction of the devil from the Demon Dung firecracker label.

The devil was an entity believed in many religions (notably Christianity and Islam) to be the embodiment of evil and the enemy of humankind.[1]

In certain Christian traditions, the devil was said to have once been an Archangel named Lucifer, but was cast out of heaven by God for his wickedness and rebelling against God, attempting to take His place on the throne in Heaven. Before his fall, Lucifer, whose name translated to "Morning Star" or "Lightbringer", was one of the most powerful Archangels and was God's favorite angel. But after creating mankind, God commanded his angels to bow down to the man. Lucifer, full of pride and jealous of God's love, refused and attempted to replace Him. War in Heaven ensued where Lucifer and a third of the angels in Heaven fought God and two thirds of the angels of Heaven but lost. God had Saint Michael, the most powerful Archangel, cast Lucifer into hell.[2] The story of Lucifer's fall was covered in the book The Hierarchie of the Blessed Angells.[3]

The Fat Lady described Sirius Black as having "eyes like the devil" after he attacked her portrait in 1993.[4]
