"She had blasted a hole in the sitting-room floor. Hermione Granger's use in 1998[src]

Deprimo is a charm which blasts holes downwards in things; it is strong enough to shatter the floor of an entire room in a matter of seconds.[2]

History

Sometime in-between 12 September and 31 October,[3] Quirinus Quirrell cast this spell on the floor underneath an unsuspecting Harry in the dungeons as he was going to collect fireflies for Severus Snape, likely in the hope that it would kill him. Harry fell, however, into the Troll Storeroom.[4]

On 30 December, 1997 Hermione Granger used this spell to blast a hole through the sitting room floor of the Lovegoods' house, after Xenophilius informed the Trio about the legend of the Deathly Hallows, then tried to turn them over to the Death Eaters in order to get back his abducted daughter (Luna Lovegood). The trio narrowly managed to escape.[5]

Known practitioners

Etymology

The incantation is Latin, meaning "dig deep" or "press down".

Behind the scenes

  • This may be related to the Gouging Spell, which also blasts holes into things.
  • Based on the etymology, it would appear this charm was meant to force a thing downwards rather than blasting holes.

  1. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (video game) (PS1 version)
  2. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
  3. Given that Harry's Potion class in the game is inbetween Harry becoming a seeker and before the troll rampage, this is the most accurate possible range, taking into account the butchered timeline of the game.
