- Hermione Granger: "Well, both my parents are dentists."
- Horace Slughorn: "Fascinating, and is that considered a dangerous profession?"
- — Hermione on her parent's careers to Horace Slughorn[src]
A dentist is a licenced medical professional who specialises in oral health and hygiene.[1]
History[]
Mr and Mrs Granger, parents of Muggle-born witch Hermione Granger, were both dentists.[2] During the 1993–1994 school year, she considered getting them some Toothflossing Stringmints as a Christmas gift, believing they would enjoy them.[3]
They had planned to fix Hermione's prominent front teeth with braces but it wasn't required. During the 1993–1994 school year, she was accidentally hit with a Densaugeo hex, which made her teeth grow at an alarming rate. When Madam Pomfrey shrank her teeth back to size, Hermione let the process go on a little longer than required, making them even. She later confessed to Harry Potter that she had previously considered fixing her teeth with magic but had resisted out of respect for her parents.[4]
In 1996, Horace Slughorn was unfamiliar with the profession and asked Hermione if it was considered dangerous when she mentioned her family at the Slug Club Christmas Party. She jokingly told him about her father being bitten by a child during one procedure, though Slughorn was unimpressed by this.[5]
My Teeth was a magazine of interest to those in this profession.[6]
When first observing Tom Riddle's diary, Harry Potter noted that there was nothing in it, "not even Auntie Mabel's birthday or dentist, half-past three."[7]
Behind the scenes[]
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, it is implied that the profession does not exist in the wizarding world, or is at least uncommon, as Professor Horace Slughorn did not know what they were.[5] However, a surgical dental operator stall can be seen in Diagon Alley under Mr Mulpepper's Apothecary in the films, implying that the profession does in fact exist in the wizarding world. In addition, in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the clock in the Weasley house showing that Fred, George, and Ron are home from rescuing Harry passes over "Quidditch", "Jail", and "Dentist", hinting that dentists are known in the wizarding world, or that the profession is known by the family through Arthur's knowledge of Muggles.
