Cushions an area/object. |
The Cushioning Charm (Spongify) creates an unseen softening effect on sitting and landing surfaces. It is primarily used in broomstick manufacturing to make the brooms more comfortable for riders. This charm was invented by Elliot Smethwyck in 1820.
Hermione Granger used this charm for protection when the Gringotts cart in which she was riding derailed.
[edit] Behind the scenes
- In the video game adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Spongify is taught in Defence Against the Dark Arts by Professor Gilderoy Lockhart. To use the spell, a spongify mat is needed, which is an area that has a swirly symbol on it. Performing the spell on the mat will cause a purple mist to cover the mat, which, when jumped on, will bounce the player high into the air.
