"They had just embarked upon the immensely difficult topic of human Transfiguration; working in front of mirrors, they were supposed to be changing the colour of their own eyebrows."
— Description[src]

Crinus Muto[1] was the incantation of a transfiguration spell that could be used to transform the colour and style of the caster's hair.[2]

History

During the 1987–1988 school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, before Jacob's sibling's first date, Andre Egwu possibly used a variation of this spell on them to grow facial hair.[3]

In December 1996, sixth-year students in Transfiguration class at Hogwarts practised this spell.[2]

Known practitioners

Etymology

From crinis, the Latin word for "hair",[5] and muto, which means "to change".[6]

Behind the scenes

  • The incantation to this spell is most likely similar to the incantation for growing facial hair, as Ronald Weasley confused the two and ended up with a fine handlebar moustache.[2]
  • In Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, the player can choose to refuse putting on facial hair before their first date, so that Andre Egwu does not potentially use this spell.[3]
