The creepers were green monsters, they exploded a hell of a lot. They apparently chose who was worthy of getting a chance to drown in the Fountain, wrapping themselves around this person, then dragging him or her through the wall into the garden, exploding. In the story, the creepers selected Steve, but Steve grabbed hold of Skele who in turn took hold of Amata, whose clothing got caught on Sir Luckless's armour, resulting in all four ending up inside the garden.
