Creatures in the wizarding world were comprised of both magical and non-magical entities, which were split by the British Ministry of Magic into three classifications: Being, Beast, or Spirit. The current definition for these categories was laid down by Minister for Magic Grogan Stump in 1811.[1]
Ministry rating
The Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures classified magical creatures by perceived dangerousness on a scale from one (X) to five (XXXXX):[1]
Classification | Description | Examples |
---|---|---|
X | Boring[1] | Flobberworm, Horklump[1] |
XX | Harmless / might be domesticated[1] | Gnome, Bowtruckle, Ghoul[1] |
XXX | Competent wizard should cope[1] | Pixie, Doxy, Hippogriff[1] |
XXXX | Dangerous / required specialist knowledge / skilled wizard might handle[1] | Erumpent, Erkling, Unicorn[1] |
XXXXX | Known wizard killer / impossible to train or domesticate[1] | Dragon, Acromantula, Werewolf[1] |
All known beasts, beings and spirits fell into these categories.[1]
Imaginary/none-existent creatures
There were several creatures that the Lovegood family believed in the existence of, which might have been non-existent, such as the Crumple-Horned Snorkack. Stories of these creatures had been known to appear in the Lovegoods' magazine, The Quibbler.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]
Behind the scenes
- Some beasts, such as ones documented by Newton Scamander: the Swooping Evil and Zouwu, have an unknown rating.
- Similarly, the rating for Non-beings such as the Dementor or Boggart, is unknown.
- J. K. Rowling has confirmed that spirit familiars for witches and wizards found in British folklore about witchcraft do not exist in the Harry Potter universe.[11]
