"'He says that counter-jinxes are improperly named,' said Hermione promptly. 'He says "counter-jinx" is just a name people give their jinxes when they want to make them sound more acceptable.'"
Wilbert Slinkhard regarding counter-jinxes[src]

A counter-jinx was a type of counter-spell that ended the effect of a jinx.[1]

Effects[]

It differed from an anti-jinx in that an anti-jinx was intended to prevent those effects rather than remove them.[2] Hermione Granger once had to look up the counter-jinx for the Jelly-Legs Jinx in June 1995.[1]

History[]

"...took particular pleasure, during the practical examination, in performing all the counter-jinxes and defensive spells right in front of Umbridge, who was watching coolly from near the doors into the Entrance Hall."
— Harry Potter's DADA practical O.W.L. exam[src]

During the 1988–1989 school year, Professor Patricia Rakepick would often ask her fifth year Defence Against the Dark Arts students to use counter-jinxes.[3]

Wilbert Slinkhard said that the term "counter-jinx" was a misnomer, implying that they were intended with just as much harm as the spells they countered, though Hermione Granger disagreed with this assessment, much to the disapproval of Dolores Umbridge in a fifth year Defence Against the Dark Arts class in late 1995.[4]

Practical Defensive Magic and Its Use Against the Dark Arts contained moving colour illustrations of the various counter-jinxes and hexes that it illustrated.[5]

Fifth years were expected to preform counter-jinxes as apart of their Defence Against the Dark Arts practical O.W.L. exam.[6]
