A cough drop is a small, medicated tablet intended to be dissolved slowly in the mouth to temporarily stop coughs.
In 1996, during Harry Potter's Careers Advice session with Professor Minerva McGonagall, Dolores Umbridge tried to interrupt by loudly clearing her throat. An incensed McGonagall offered her a cough drop in a curt fashion, without even looking at Umbridge.[1]
