"Reckon Fred'd take a bit of Cockroach Cluster if I told him they were peanuts?"
— Ron Weasley, discussing some confectionery found at Hogsmeade.[src]

Cockroach Clusters were sweets made of cockroaches,[2] shaped like peanuts.

History

"Jacob takes a packet from his pocket and tips a dark clump into his mouth, offers it to the others."
Jacob Kowalski having Cockroach Clusters[src]

They were sold at Honeydukes in Hogsmeade,[1] which were said to be the best.[3]

In 1932, some "nice" Slytherin boys gave Muggle Jacob Kowalski a bag of Cockroach Clusters in the Great Hall when he was visiting Hogwarts, to which Jacob seemed quite uncomfortable by when he learned what the sweets were despite having previously said that they were delicious.[3]

Newt Scamander once claimed that he had “never much cared” for Cockroach Clusters.[3]

Ron Weasley once thought he could fool Fred into eating some if he told him they were peanuts.[1] Once, when Harry Potter was trying to enter Professor Dumbledore's office, he was able to guess the password, which was "Cockroach Clusters".[4]

Behind the scenes

  • In the real world, there are actual Cockroach Clusters candies, which are sold as novelties. The website Candy Addict rated them number seven of the "10 grossest candies." [5]
  • Cockroach clusters may be a reference to the confection referred to in the Monty Python sketch, "Crunchy Frog". The titular Chocolate Frog sweet, however, is not; a small frog-shaped chocolate is a common English confection.
