A cloak is a type of loose garment that is worn over indoor clothing and serves the same purpose as an overcoat, it protects the wearer from the cold, rain or wind for example, or it may form part of a fashionable outfit or uniform. Black cloaks are commonly worn by wizards and witches alike all over the wizarding world.
Known cloaks
While most wizards and witches wore a standard black cloak, other types of cloaks include:
- The Hogwarts winter cloak: As part of the school uniform, students were required, in cold weather, to wear a winter cloak with silver fastenings.
- The Cloak of Invisibility: Only one true cloak of Invisibility is in existence, that which was passed down through the generations from Ignotus Peverell, eventually to reach Harry Potter. This cloak renders the wearer truly invisible.
Behind the scenes
- Although the cloak is more common in the wizarding world, it is not entirely uncommon for muggles to also wear them on certain occasions.
