A chimaera (American English:Chimera; plural: chim(a)eras) is a type of hybrid animal native to Greece. First recorded in Greek mythology, the chimaera is a vicious, bloodthirsty creature with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a dragon's tail. Because of their ferocity, chimaeras are classified by the Ministry of Magic as XXXXX (very dangerous) and their eggs are classified as Class A Non-Tradable Goods. Dai Llewellyn, the famous Caerphilly Catapults player, was killed by a Chimaera while on holiday in Greece.

In the Muggle world, the term "chimera" is used to denote an organism which has mixed DNA in its body, e.g. one DNA signature in its upper torso and an entirely different one in its lower torso.
