Chancellor of the Exchequer is the title held by the British Cabinet minister who is responsible for all economic and financial matters.[2]

History

Gordon Brown was the Chancellor of the Exchequer before the 1990s. He fought to attract the business community to the Labour Party.[3]

Alistair Darling was the Chancellor of the Exchequer by July 1996, and had been one of several people who tried unsuccessfully remove the portrait of Ulick Gamp from the wall in the Prime Minister's office.[1] He also announced "controversial changes" to the capital gains tax.[3]
