Chalk is a type of soft rock that in school settings is typically used for writing information on blackboards.

Peeves the poltergeist was known for regularly pelting chalk at unfortunate students of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who were late for class.[1] Early in the 1991–1992 school year, he was discovered by Professor Minerva McGonagall using chalk to write rude words on a blackboard. When she ordered him out of the classroom, he chucked the chalk in a bin.[2]

The face of Lord Voldemort as seen on the back of Quirinus Quirrell's head was described as appearing chalk white.[3]

In 1996, as Dolores Umbridge fled from Hogwarts, Peeves whacked her alternately with Minerva McGonagall's walking stick and a sock full of chalk.[4]

In March 1997, as Peeves observed a fight between Kreacher and Dobby, he pelted them with chalk to further enrage them.[5]

In June of that year, as Harry Potter raced to meet with Albus Dumbledore to go on a trip with him to obtain a Horcrux, Peeves threw bits of chalk at him "in a routine sort of way".[6]
