The Caterwauling Charm causes anyone entering the perimeter of a set area to to set off an "alarm" which makes a high-pitched shriek. Harry, Hermione, and Ron, accidentally set off a Caterwauling Charm when they Apparated from the lake they were hiding by at the time. This alerted the Death Eaters in the village to their presence, the trio then avoided capture owing to the assistance of Aberforth Dumbledore.
