Canon is a word used to describe a fixed collection of text.
In the Harry Potter universe canon refers to the 7 books, the school books, information on jkrowling.com and anything J. K. Rowling says. On the opposite end of the spectrum from canon is fanon, information or stories based in the Harry Potter universe, but the story and events of which are created by fans.
