- "It's a shame you had to see him on a Burning Day. He's really very handsome most of the time, wonderful red and gold plumage."
- — Albus Dumbledore introducing Harry Potter to Fawkes[src]
Burning Day was the name of the day in which a phoenix bursted into flame and was reborn from the ashes.[1] A phoenix at this stage of its life was described as "decrepit-looking" and resembling "a half-plucked turkey" before it bursted into flame. After bursting into flame, the phoenix emerged from its own ashes as a newborn, which Harry Potter regarded as "quite as ugly as the old one".[1]
Known Burning Days[]
Behind the scenes[]
- On 18 June, 1996, Fawkes swallowed a Killing Curse cast by Lord Voldemort, at which point he burst into flames and was reborn.[2] It is unknown if this counts as a Burning Day, as his death was not by natural causes.
- "Baby Fawkes the phoenix" was one out of the thirty-two options generated by an old feature[3] on Pottermore, "Wonderful wizarding world happiness generator", which was about describing cute things that could 'cast away the Monday blues'.[4]
- The description for Fawkes was "Aw, little bald Fawkes. Although he never looked his best after 'Burning Day', who cares about fabulous gold and red plumage when you can literally bring yourself back to life?".[5]
