"Artium Magister."
— Gagwilde's motto, as inscribed on the portrait depicting him and Professor Aragon playing chess.[src]

Professor Brian Gagwilde was a wizard and a Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.[2] Professor Gagwilde also wrote Jiggery Pokery and Hocus Pocus.[3][4]

His portrait, in which he is depicted as playing a game of chess with Walter Aragon, is still at the Headmaster's office, to give advice to the current Head.

  1. J.K. Rowling stated at the Edinburgh Book Festival on 15 August 2014 (source) that all portraits at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry are of deceased individuals. Thus, Gagwilde must have died sometime in or before 1992, given his portrait's appearance in the Headmaster's office in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
