—Gagwilde's motto, as inscribed on the portrait depicting him and Professor Aragon playing chess.[src]

Professor Brian Gagwilde was a wizard and a Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.[2] Professor Gagwilde also wrote Jiggery Pokery and Hocus Pocus.[3][4]

His portrait, in which he is depicted as playing a game of chess with Walter Aragon, is still at the Headmaster's office, to give advice to the current Head.

Notes and references

  1. According to J.K. Rowling at the Edinburgh Book Festival (J.K. Rowling at the Edinburgh Book Festival (15 August, 2004) source), headmasters only get their portrait hung in the office if they die holding the title of headmaster. As Armando Dippet was headmaster from at least 1943 until being succeeded by Albus Dumbledore, Professor Gagwilde must have died at some point before 1943.
