Brian Cinderford was a Gryffindor student who began attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1990.[1] He competed in the school Wizard Skittles tournament during the 1996–1997 school year.

Etymology

The meaning of the name "Brian" is not known for certain but it is possibly related to the old Celtic element bre meaning "hill", or by extension "high, noble". It was borne by the semi-legendary Irish king Brian Boru, who thwarted Viking attempts to conquer Ireland in the 11th century. He was slain in the Battle of Clontarf, though his forces were decisively victorious. The name was common in Ireland before his time, and even more so afterwards. It came into use in England in the Middle Ages, introduced by Breton settlers.

Notes and References

  1. 1.0 1.1 Brian appears in both the PlayStation 2 version of the Prisoner of Azkaban video game and the Nintendo DS version of the Half-Blood Prince video game. Since there were only five Gryffindor boys in Harry's year and all of their names are known, in order to have still been at Hogwarts during the 1996-1997 term, he must have been in the year above Harry.
