Rogue bludger

A bludger coming toward the Gryffindor Quidditch team's captain, Oliver Wood.[HP2]

A Bludger is a round, jet black ball, made of iron, used in the wizarding sport of Quidditch. It is 10 inches in diameter. The two Bludgers used in every game are bewitched to try and knock players off their brooms. The Bludgers are batted by each of the team's two Beaters to protect other team members and hit it at opposing players.

History

Early Bludgers were simply rocks bewitched to chase players around the field. These bludgers were eventually too fragile, and could be smashed by beater's bat, making players be chased by flying gravel for the rest of the game. After a few years, Bludgers were made by lead, which, was also too soft for Bludger manufacture, as the magically reinforced Beaters' bats could dent it, thus impairing their ability to fly straight. All Bludgers are currently made of iron.
