A blood malediction, also known as a blood curse (incantation unknown), was a dangerous curse that could be passed down and inherited through the original victim's bloodline to descendants at birth as a genetic defect, and affect the victim in a variety of different ways.[1]
Description[]
The curse allowed to create a specific type of genetic defect that could be utilized to affect a victim in a variety of different, mostly negative ways, including a frail physical condition, or a dangerous, gradually uncontrollable Animagus-like genetic defect that eventually turned its female victim into a type of beast permanently. The curse could for then be passed down and inherited by the descendants of the victim's bloodline, and it was believed that passing certain conditions, including the Maledictus curse, was somehow related to sex-related genes, allowing only the descendant members of one's own sex to be affected.
History[]
Astoria Malfoy suffered from a "serious" blood malediction, as a result of a curse placed on one of her ancestors, which resurfaced in her after many generations. The condition left her frail, and thus she had only one child, Scorpius. Childbirth was noted to have been risky to her health due to the malediction, as Draco and her son tried to dissuade her from it to preserve her health.[1] It likely contributed to her early death in 2019.[2]
Cereus Greengrass also had a blood malediction, for which both her father and Harry Potter were desperate to find a cure.[3]
Known victims[]
Trivia[]
- Despite the similarities between the two conditions, lycanthropy was not considered a type of blood malediction, and a female werewolf was not considered a Maledictus.
- The casting of the curse was not completely known. It was not known whether this curse was cast like a normal spell, with an incantation.
