"Danger lies before you, while safety lies behind,
Two of us will help you, whichever you would find,
One among us seven will let you move ahead,
Another will transport the drinker back instead.
"
— The potion riddle in the Underground Chambers[src]

The Fire Protection Potion,[4][5] also known as the Ice Potion,[6] was a potion used to move through flames unscathed. When drunk, it induced a sensation of ice and frigidity in the drinker, and provided protection from most magical fires.[1]

History[]

"It was indeed as though ice was flooding his body."
— The sensation of drinking this potion[src]

The Marauders' puzzle involved gathering ingredients to make this potion which, when poured onto the parchment that the puzzle was written on and tossed into the Gryffindor common room fire, would congratulate the student on solving the puzzle.[7]

In the 1985–1986 school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the Fire Protection Potion was taught to second-years by Professor Severus Snape in Potions class.[2]

During the same year, Jacob's sibling and Ben Copper created this potion and poured it onto the parchment which contained the Marauders' puzzle, then tossed the parchment into the fire, solving the puzzle.[7]

Severus Snape brewed this potion in September of 1991, as part of his protection of the Philosopher's Stone.[1] Quirinus Quirrell and Harry Potter later each took this potion in order to get past the flames and into the deepest room of Underground Chambers, containing the Mirror of Erised and Philosopher's Stone. It is presumed Albus Dumbledore also used this potion to bypass the black flames and enter the room containing the Mirror to save Harry from Quirrell.

Recipe[]

  1. Slice bursting mushrooms with knife, add to cauldron and stir clockwise until potion turns blue.[7]
  2. Add Salamander blood to cauldron, stir anti-clockwise until potion turns green.[7]
  3. Crush wartcap powder in pestle, add to cauldron and stir clockwise until potion turns red.[3][7]

Behind the scenes[]

  • Given that every potion requires a magical component to complete the brewing process, the most likely spell needed to complete this potion is the Flame-Freezing Charm.
