The Beater's bat was a piece of Quidditch equipment used by Beaters, in the game of Quidditch, to hit Bludgers away from their own team members and towards players on the other team. The bats were magically reinforced to give them greater strength.[1]

History[]

In the 15th century, when Bludgers were made of rock, the bats would often shatter the rock, resulting in flying gravel. Experiments with lead Bludgers began in the early 16th century, but the bats proved to be too strong for them also, denting them when they were struck. The Bludgers made of iron were strong enough to not break when hit by the bats.[1]

On 8 March 1997, during the Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff Quidditch match, Cormac McLaggen wrestled Jimmy Peakes' Beater's bat out of his hands to show him how to hit a Bludger. In doing so, Cormac mishit the Bludger straight at Harry's head knocking him unconscious and cracking his skull.[2]

During the Calamity which affected the wizarding world in the 2010s, Beater's bats were amongst the various other magical items which posed a threat to the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

Concept art of Beater's bats from the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

  • In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, when explaining the rules to Harry Potter, Oliver Wood gave Harry a Beater's bat to protect himself against the Bludgers as he was demonstrating the Bludgers' functions and abilities. Harry ends up hitting the Bludger on his first try, causing Wood to comment that Harry would also make a decent beater. Also in the film, Marcus Flint grabbed a Beater's bat from a Slytherin Beater to hit Oliver Wood with a Bludger after the latter continuously blocked goal attempts made by the Slytherin Quidditch team.
  • Given the size of the Bludgers themselves, which assuming that they are made of solid iron would render them approximately 149 pounds, a Beater's bat may also be enchanted to amplify the striking power of the Beater handling the bat in order to knock them a safe distance away.
