Professor Bathsheda Babbling was a witch and professor of Study of Ancient Runes and possibly Ancient Studies at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.[1]
Etymology
- "Babble" is an English word means "a foolish character" or "the sound of murmuring water".
- "Bathsheba" is the name of the biblical wife of David and mother to Solomon.
Behind the scenes
- Professor Babbling's name only appeared on a list of the Hogwarts professors which was released on J. K. Rowling's website.
- It is possible that the teacher portrayed by Hazel Showham in the Harry Potter films is Professor Babbling. However, this is unconfirmed.
- In the Harry Potter Prequel, when the police ask for their names, Sirius gives him three apparently random names: Wilberforce, Bathsheba and Elvendork. The middle name may be a reference to this professor.
- JKR may originally have intended a male teacher to teach this subject.HP Lexicon´s transcript of JKR´s notes
- Bathsheda's name was written with just enough illegibility that it could either be Bathsheba or Bathsheda, though it does tend to look a little more like the latter.
