"Well, you'll need to demonstrate the ability to react well to pressure and so forth, perseverance and dedication, because Auror training takes a further three years, not to mention very high skills in practical defence. It will mean a lot more study, even after you've left school..."
—Minerva McGonagall informs Harry Potter about the process to become an Auror.[src]

Auror training is a three year long program set by the Auror Office to train and evaluate potential Aurors. The program is considered very stringent, and only the best wizards are accepted into it.[1]

Qualifications

To qualify for Auror training, a witch or wizard must first have attained at least five N.E.W.T.s of no less that Exceeds Expectations. Minerva McGonagall once recommended that Defense Against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration, Charms, and Potions would be useful N.E.W.T. level classes for those wishing to pursue a career as an Auror.[1]

After graduating, the Ministry sets a series of character and aptitude tests to further test the worth of potential applicants. The Ministry also runs a background check into the records of new applicants; it was once implied by Dolores Umbridge that wizards with a criminal record cannot become an Auror.[1]

However, the above requirements could be circumvented by some after 1998: anyone who had fought in the Battle of Hogwarts was immediately deemed fit for Auror training.[citation needed]

The course of study

For those who are accepted, Auror training takes three years of further study after Hogwarts.[1] Known subjects include Concealment and Disguise and Stealth and Tracking.[2]
