After the downfall of Lord Voldemort during the First Wizarding War, Rodolphus Lestrange, Rabastan Lestrange, Bellatrix Lestrange and Barty Crouch Jr. tortured Aurors Frank and Alice Longbottom with the Cruciatus Curse for information on the whereabouts of Voldemort.

Punishment
The four torturers were sentenced to life imprisonment in Azkaban by Barty Crouch Sr. for their crime against the married couple.
Escape
A year after his sentence, Barty Crouch Jr. was aided to escape the prison by his parents: Barty Crouch Sr. and, in particular, Mrs. Crouch. [1] In January 1996, a mass breakout from Azkaban initiated by Voldemort set ten long-imprisoned Death Eaters loose which included Bellatrix, Rodolphus and Rabastan.
Effect on the victims
The use of the Cruciatus Curse sent its victims permanently and irreversibly mad. Frank Longbottom and Alice Longbottom currently reside at St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries [2] in the incurable wing. Neville Longbottom lives with his grandmother, Augusta Longbottom, (Frank's mother) and visits his parents for Christmas and other holidays. Although they do not recognise him as their son, Alice recognises Neville as someone she is fond of, and often presented him with chewing gum wrappers.
