After the downfall of Lord Voldemort during the First Wizarding War, Rodolphus Lestrange, Rabastan Lestrange, Bellatrix Lestrange and Bartemius Crouch Jr. tortured Aurors Frank and Alice Longbottom with the Cruciatus Curse for information of the whereabouts of Voldemort. The four torturers were sentenced for life in Azkaban by Bartemius Crouch Sr. for there crime against the married couple, but Barty Crouch Jr. was broken free by his father about a year later.
In January 1996, a mass breakout from Azkaban set ten long-imprisoned Death Eaters loose which included Bellatrix, Rodolphus, and Rabastan.
Effect
Frank Longbottom and Alice Longbottom currently resides at St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries in the incurable wing. Neville Longbottom lives with his grandmother, Augusta Longbottom, (Frank's mother) and visits his parents for Christmas and other holidays. Although they do not recognize him as their son, Alice recognizes Neville as someone she is fond of.
