" [...] the capture, and by means of the Cruciatus curse, torture of the Auror Frank Longbottom and his wife!"
— Igor Karkaroff[src]

The Attack on Alice and Frank Longbottom was committed by Rodolphus Lestrange, Rabastan Lestrange, Bellatrix Lestrange and Barty Crouch Jr. after the downfall of Lord Voldemort during the First Wizarding War.

The two Aurors, Frank Longbottom and his wife Alice Longbottom, were tortured by the aforementioned Death Eaters by means of the Cruciatus Curse for information on the whereabouts of Voldemort.

Consequences for the attackers

Punishment

The four torturers were sentenced to life imprisonment in Azkaban by Barty Crouch Sr. for their crime against the married couple, although it took awhile, till the hearing of Igor Karkaroff, to find out that Barty Crouch Jr. was the other Death Eater who tortured Frank and Alice Longbottom.

Escape

A year after his sentence, Barty Crouch Jr. was aided to escape the prison by his parents: Barty Crouch Sr. and, in particular, Mrs. Crouch.[1] In January 1996, a mass breakout from Azkaban initiated by Voldemort set ten long-imprisoned Death Eaters loose which included Bellatrix, Rodolphus and Rabastan.

Effect on the victims

The use of the Cruciatus Curse destroyed the victims' sanity. Frank and Alice Longbottom currently reside at St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries [2] in the incurable wing. Neville Longbottom lives with his grandmother, Augusta Longbottom, (Frank's mother) and visits his parents for Christmas and other holidays. Although they do not recognise him as their son, Alice recognises Neville as someone she is fond of, and often presented him with chewing gum wrappers as gifts.

This attack was considered to be one of the most atrocious and infamous acts within the First Wizarding War, and the people supported wholeheartedly the imprisonment of the four Death Eaters who destroyed the famous Longbottoms.
