- "Oh, it's wonderful! It's my favourite subject!"
- — Hermione Granger[src]
Arithmancy is a Hogwarts subject taught by Professor Septima Vector. It comes from the Greek arithmo, meaning "number" and mancy, meaning "prophecy." This subject is taught in Classroom 7A, on the Castle's seventh floor. It is Hermione Granger's favourite subject and involves complicated number charts, but nothing else is known about the subject.
Class Information
Arithmancy is described as the branch of magic that deals with numbers, exploring their magical properties. Bridget Wenlock was mentioned as a famous Arithmancer, "First to discover the magical properties of the number seven", clearly supporting the previous theory. Also, one of the textbooks used in this class is Numerology and Grammatica: numerology, as the esoteric and magical study of number, and grammatica, as grammar in Latin language, suggesting a connection between words and numbers.
