- "Arrows fans will agree that their team's most glorious hour was their 1932 defeat of the team who were then the European champions, the Vratsa Vultures, in a match that lasted sixteen days in conditions of dense fog and rain."
- — Kennilworthy Whisp, Quidditch Through the Ages[src]
The Appleby Arrows were a Quidditch team from the town of Appleby-in-Westmorland in Cumbria, England. The Arrows played in the British and Irish Quidditch League. Founded in 1612, the Arrows played in robes of pale blue, emblazoned with a silver arrow. There was traditionally fierce rivalry between the Arrows and the Wimbourne Wasps.[1]
Gregory Cotton was a Seeker for the Appleby Arrows.
The Arrows were the only known English Quidditch team not located in the West Country.
History
1612
The club was founded.
Mid-seventeenth century
They started their infamous rivalry with the Wimbourne Wasps when one of the Wasps' players hit a beehive at the Arrows' seeker, who was so badly stung he had to retire.[2] Throughout the centuries, there would be many incidents between the Arrows and the Wasps, which usually ended with one or other or the teams being sent to St. Mungo's.[3]
1894
The club's supporters old practise of shooting arrows into the air from their wands every time their Chasers scored was banned by the Department of Magical Games and Sports in 1894, when one of these weapons pierced the referee, Nugent Potts, through the nose.[2]
1932
Arrows fans agreed that their team's most glorious hour was their 1932 defeat of the team who were then the European champions, the Vratsa Vultures, in a match that lasted sixteen days in conditions of dense fog and rain.[2]
1990s
The Arrows defeated the Chudley Cannons in the Summer, aided by a pathetic performance by Cannons Seeker Galvin Gudgeon.[4]
Pride of Portree were defeated by the Arrows. The two Seekers collided in their race for the Golden Snitch, and both had illegal jinxes used on them.[5]
The Arrows were seventh in the League in October.[4]
1990–1991
At least three players for the Arrows were sent to St. Mungo's when a riot broke out during a friendly game against their rivals, the Wimbourne Wasps. One of the Chasers for their team accidentally caused a Snitchnip foul when they brushed against the Snitch in order to avoid a Bludger.[3]
Behind the scenes
- The Arrows were thought to have been based in Appleby, North Lincolnshire, however, in the latest edition of Quidditch Through the Ages Illustrated Edition, there is a map with the location of all the Quidditch teams in Britain and Ireland, and the Appleby Arrows are shown to be located in the Appleby in Cumbria. This is also further evidenced by Bloomsbury presenting the town with a banner of Appleby Arrows and named an official Honorary Quidditch Town.[6]
