The Appeal Against House-Elf Slavery was an appeal made to the British Ministry of Magic, in an attempt to forbear the enslavement of house-elves in wizarding Britain. The Ministry of Magic defeated this appeal in 1973.[1]
Later, when Hermione Granger joined the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures at the Ministry, in the 2000s, she was instrumental in greatly improving life for house-elves and their kind.
