Apparition is an optional twelve-week course offered at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for, as its name suggests, learning how to Apparate. The class begins shortly after the Christmas holidays and is offered to students who are seventeen, or who will turn seventeen during the school year. The course costs 12 Galleons. It was taught by Ministry of Magic employee Wilkie Twycross in 1997.

Twycross taught by the "Three D's of Apparition": Destination, Determination, and Deliberation. At the end of the class, those who passed the test received a licence to Apparate. Those who splinched themselves, even in a minor way, would be forced to retake the test.

Those who have taken the test

In the 1997 class, Ron Weasley failed his initial test for splinching his eyebrow, while Hermione Granger passed flawlessly. Harry Potter, Draco Malfoy and Ernie Macmillan are some of the sixth year students who had to wait longer to take their Apparition test because of their late birthdays. Fred and George Weasley are known to have passed their apparition test "with distinction". Charlie Weasley apparated 5 miles south from where he was supposed to go and landed on an old lady doing her shopping the first time.

Behind the scenes

  • Receiving an Apparition licence can be compared to receiving a driver's licence in the Muggle world. Both are privileges reserved for those who are overage, and dangerous if done improperly or inattentively. The same can be said for the course, which is reminiscent of Driver's Ed.
