The annual broom race was held in Sweden and had been contested since the tenth century. Entrants raced a course of just over 300 miles[1] (48 Swedish miles)[2] from Kopparberg to Arjeplog. The course ran through a Swedish Short-Snout dragon reservation, and the enormous silver trophy was in the shape of a Swedish Short-Snout.[1]

The race evolved into an international event, with wizards and witches from all over the world attending, seeing off the competitors at Kopparberg, then Apparating to Arjeplog to welcome the survivors.[1] The 1956 Annual Broom Race was held on 21 December.[2]

By 2009, Zola Farrell had competed at least once in the race; she didn't win, but she said to her son that it was a blast.[3]

Before 2009, Ambrose Turner, together with his daughter Lottie, visited the Swedish dragon reservation to try to do a painting, but they Apparated there on the same day the race was taking place, and were unable to paint at all.[3]
